New Mentors: Naif Al-Mutawa: Superheroes Inspired by Islam

Naif Al-Mutawa:
Superheroes Inspired by Islam
www.tedtalks.com ~ 2010:

In "THE 99," Naif Al-Mutawa's new generation of comic book heroes fight more than crime -- they smash stereotypes and battle extremism. Named after the 99 attributes of Allah, his characters reinforce positive messages of Islam and cross cultures to create a new moral framework for confronting evil, even teaming up with the Justice League of America.

Speakers Naif Al-Mutawa: Creator, The 99

Why you should listen to him:
Widad the Loving, Bari the Healer, Mumita the Destroyer and friends, all working together to fight evil -- the virtues of Islam are embodied in the characters of the thrilling new comic The 99. Naif Al-Mutawa, a clinical psychologist by training, created the characters with a team of artists and writers to showcase traditional, tolerant and enlightened Muslim values in the guise of good old-fashioned superheroes, ordinary mortals who acquire special powers and crisscross the globe on missions.

Soon, the 99 heroes will be saving the world alongside all-American heroes Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman in a crossover comic with the Justice League. The 99 comic is the corner stone of an expanding family (moving toward videogames and theme parks) that will bring these characters into the mainstream; an animated cartoon series has been announced for fall 2010 on US cable channel The Hub. And US President Barack Obama recently commended The 99 for capturing the imagination of young people through their message of tolerance.

"All the characters in 'The 99' are the epitome of kindness, generosity, wisdom and honesty, which are core Islamic values. Al-Mutawa uses 'The 99' to spread a message of peace that the world really needs to hear."

I'm Passionate About:

Empowering children to shape their lives and the future of society around the core values of peace and justice and to do in one generation that which mankind has failed to do in its entire history.

An Idea Worth spreading:

The Golden Rule is the common tenet found in all religions. It is the basis of justice and human equity that holds us together as societies. But the political manipulation of people often depends on separating those things that bind us from those things that make us different. Instead of valuing our commonalities and celebrating our individual differences, those who seek power over us often use the fear of those differences to divide and subdue us.

THE 99 offers the children exciting and entertaining messages of the triumph of good over evil, where the core principles of its creator’s religion (in this case, Islam) are used as transparent building blocks for the powers possessed by its comic superhero characters.

The positive role models created by THE 99 are as valuable to Buddhist, Jewish, Muslim, Christian and non-religious children as are the values of honor, truth, mercy, knowledge, strength, generosity, foresight and the rest of The 99 values upon which the series is based.

Talk To Me About:

As a PhD candidate, I worked at the Survivors of Political Torture Unit at Bellevue Hospital. My experience with people betrayed by their own leaders was a terrifying look at my good fortune of birth.

People don't know that I am good at:

If I knew things I was good at that other people didn’t know, I would have told them about them long ago. Honesty is a quality I possess in abundance; modesty is not.

Love Is Love No Matter What Shape It Arrives In ~ An Aussie Love Story

Love is Love
No Matter What Shape It Arrives
by Margo Renay SullivanThis is A Visual Parable About Perceived Locked Cages
and overcoming OUR perceptions of Broken Wings.

~ACT I ~
Broken Flights

About eight years ago a wild Australian Sulphur Crested Cockatoo flew into a car and broke its wing. The motorist took it to the Vet in Nerang ,Queensland who had to amputate the wing.

We adopted her - for which we needed a National Parks and Wildlife permit - and kept her in a cage outside where she was often visited by wild Cockatoos. One of the things that impressed us was how she would push lettuce leaves through the bars of the cage, offering food to visitors.

Last Sunday she again had a visitor.

As usual he spent a lot of time sitting on the cage with a tamper proof latch.

There was a lot of talking and grooming. A bloke has to look presentable when courting a bird!

Things got interesting when he approached the front door...

The clever fellow figured out how to undo the tamper proof latch!

He opened the door for a lot of mutual grooming and food sharing...

Oooh that's nice! Scratch a bit more on that side, dear...

He was not shy to get into the cage and would go in and out a number of times.

They mated! We are looking forward to beautiful baby cockatoos. Will keep you posted.

Tango in OZLater on, the whole extended family came visiting but the special mate was back every day so far.

We leave the door open during the day but if we forget, it doesn't matter ~ cockatoos have intelligence that rival primates. Because she has only one wing, she stays inside or just sits on top. Guess what happened next...

The Babies
At first it seemed as though he was annoyed because she did not fly off with him and he would squawk a lot. He soon came to understand that she could not fly so he just stayed. However, she was no longer returning to her cage.

The two of them would stay in the trees in our garden and because the yard is well fenced, they were safe from dogs but the neighbour's cat is not kept indoors at night and we often have to chase it away. Chances are the cat would come off second best in a confrontation with a Cockatoo but at night cats remain a danger because they could stalk a sleeping bird on the ground.(In This Realm of course)

Cockatoos make their nests in hollow logs but we noticed the male hard at work digging a hole under a clump of Lilly Pilly trees. We put down a hollow log for them but they just ignored us. The nest he dug was a hole with a short tunnel leading off to where she laid her eggs.

Once there were eggs in the nest, the male became extremely aggressive. You better not get near the nest or he will take chunks of flesh from your foot. It was difficult to take these pictures because I literally had to steal them while running away from the male.
The New Cheeky Set (Hip Birds)We kept a vigil to see how things were progressing. They took turns incubating the eggs and covering the tunnel. After about three weeks, the eggs hatched. Have a careful look at this picture and try to spot the bit of yellow fluff.

Whenever Mum & Dad Cockatoo leave the nest, we try to get a look but you have to do it while running because Dad Cockatoo is chasing you!

Second lap running around the Lilly Pilly trees!

Well, I hope his mother thinks he is pretty and eventually I might think so too but at the moment, both of them just look like pink balls with a bit of yellow fluff. The New Cheeky Ones ~ Definitely has the aaawwwww factor!*****~POST SCRIPT~

The Spherical We: an unfinished work of art ~ Michaelangelo

The Spherical We: an unfinished work of art

 Merci! Bradley Rand Smith...So Beaute'

Michelangelo created the top Pieta in 1499, the bottom around 1552-64. Later, he is said to have considered the first to be youthful arrogance, as he was trying to best God. However, in his last years, Michelangelo considered the bottom pieta to be perfection, and one of his greatest works, because we are never finished...Photos: Pieta Rondanini (unfinished)
